Hello! My name is Lauren Lee. Welcome to Science Speaks! This is the first blog post of many.
You may be wondering about why I started Science Speaks. Like a lot of people my age, I had no idea what I wanted to do after college. I wanted to help students from around the world learn about the many different careers in the science field and encourage others to pursue it in higher levels of education. What better way to do this than to seek advice and learn about science firsthand from people in the workforce?
I first brought Science Speaks into the world at Castro Valley High School. We had multiple speakers come and talk about their careers, and it was a huge success! Our school did not have an existing program like this, and the large turnouts each meeting really showed me how interested people were in learning about science.
As I sought out people for potential speakers, I was shocked to see such a huge gender imbalance in a majority of science fields. In multiple fields, females account for less than 10% of the workforce. That is crazy! Through this organization, I hope to help bridge the disparity and encourage other people who identify as female to pursue science. At Science Speaks, we are committed to helping EVERYONE learn about science, and will do our best to fulfill that promise.
